President Blames Congress for Failing to Close Guantanamo in Counterterrorism Speech

Addressing the National Defense University on Thursday on the subject of US Counterterrorism Policy, President Obama reiterated his desire, first stated in a 2007 campaign pledge, to close Guantanamo Bay detention facility. During his 40-minute speech, the President walked a fine line between two competing agendas: protecting our nation from those who wish us harm and trying to restore America’s image as a champion of human rights, especially in countries where we are confronting terrorists.

Covering Ground to Ground the Drones

On June 8 Chicago-based Voices for Creative Nonviolence (VCNV), will kick off their Covering Ground to Ground the Drones protest, to bring awareness of the use of drones in warfare. The peaceful walk will take place on Saturday, June 8 and end on June 23, near Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., where drones are made and stored. Day walkers and overnighters will cover 190-5 miles, between 12-17 miles a day, and finish in Des Moines, Iowa.
